Family homes typically have more than one bedroom along with a kitchen, bath and living room. However, these amenities can be made available in different kinds of dwellings that vary in scale, size and design. Some of the common types of family homes that one can find are:

- Detached family homes – These are family homes that are completely separate and not attached to any other dwelling or family home from any side.

- Semi detached family homes – A family home that is attached to another dwelling from one side. Sometimes duplex or triplex family homes are also referred to as semi detached since they are attached at the base.

- Penthouse family homes – Penthouse family homes are homes that are built on the last floor of an apartment building. These are extremely child friendly since the children in the family can have access to a large play area on the roof.

- Railroad family apartments – Smaller than most dwellings, these family homes are row houses that are narrow and may have a couple of floors to accommodate the space requirement.
